Surrounded by classically beautiful Oxfordshire countryside, the region’s gastro pubs bring refinement and style underpinned by a sense of history. Of course, superb food and carefully chosen drink is always a key part of the experience. Here the Good Hotel Guide shares some of the best gastro pubs with rooms in Oxfordshire…

The Feathered Nest, Chipping Norton

An 18th century malthouse that’s been turned into a dreamy restaurant-with-rooms, The Feathered Nest sits proudly overlooking the Evenlode Valley. Combining a vivacious sense of modern hospitality with food from Michelin-starred chef Matt Weedon. Naturally, food is very much at the heart of the experience but so too is a cosy pint in the pub by a crackling fire and with live music in true pub style.

The Lamb Inn, Burford

In a quiet town on the River Windrush, The Lamb Inn has been welcoming guests since the 1750s. A weaver, cooper and chandler once occupied the 16th-century cottages from which it is forged, and inside there are still lots of nods to that history. The mullioned windows and log filled fireplace are combined with beautiful interiors that envelope you as soon as you walk in, while luxurious touches like homemade flapjacks and Molton Brown toiletries await you in your room.

The Greyhound Inn, Wantage

In the Vale of the White Horse, The Greyhound Inn is an 18th-century country pub in a village that’s filled with birdsong. The beer garden is a real draw card in the summer months – best enjoyed with one of their craft ales or carefully chosen wines. Leather chairs and brick fireplaces make for a cosy place to retreat in the winter, while a good night’s sleep awaits in stylish bedrooms complete with home-made biscuits and Bramley toiletries.

Letcombe Regis, Wantage, Oxfordshire

The Maytime Inn, Burford

A friendly, 17th century coaching inn overlooking golden fields, The Maytime Inn offer good value combined with real authenticity. Exposed stone speaks to the history of the building, making for an idyllic environment in which to tuck into a hearty roast, pub classics and seasonal rustic dishes. Spend the evening nursing one of their array of gins before retreating to the quiet comfort of their rooms.

Asthall, Burford, Oxfordshire

The Bell at Hampton Poyle, Kidlington

A nine-bedroom boutique hotel, The Bell at Hampton Poyle opened in 2009, transforming a historic pub into a welcoming inn. Flagstone floors, oak beams and leather armchairs to sink into, it’s got classic English style but combined with modern touches of easy luxury. Food ranges from pizza to steak and superb Sunday roasts, paired with a delicious selection of wines and spirits.
