Good Pub Guide Recommended
Extended pub in fine scenery and open all day; popular food; bedrooms
Once again, we've had enthusiastic reports from readers staying at this isolated 16th-c inn, and breakfasts are first class. There are numerous surrounding hikes and the Coast to Coast path is nearby; the views over the valleys of Rosedale and Farndale are breathtaking. The low-beamed rambling bars have open fires, a few big high-backed rustic settles around cast-iron-framed tables, lots of small dining chairs, a nice leather sofa and stone walls hung with old engravings and photographs of the pub under snow (it can easily get cut off in winter - 40 days is the record so far). The fine choice of beers on handpump might include Black Sheep Best, Beer Monkey Brew Blonde Rogue, Great Yorkshire Yorkshire Golden, Marstons Wainwright and Theakstons Best and Old Peculier, as well as 13 wines by the glass and several malt whiskies; background music and games machine.
Bar food times: 12-10
Hearty helpings of popular food includes sandwiches, prawn cocktail, giant yorkshire pudding with gravy, nut roast with port and cranberry sauce, ham with egg or pineapple, beef curry, home-made fishcakes with tartare sauce, chicken topped with creamy leek and bacon sauce, beer-battered cod and chips, duck breast in orange sauce, fillet steak medallions in stilton sauce, and puddings such as chocolate nut sundae and jam rolypoly with custard.
