Whitewashed village pub with two bustling bars, beams, flagstones and log fires, a couple of ales such as Helmsley and Theakstons, ten or so wines by the glass from extensive list, restaurant in 18th-c granary serving generous helpings of good freshly made food from lunchtime sandwiches to daily specials, friendly attentive staff; children welcome, no dogs, pretty village and surrounding countryside, near ruins of Byland Abbey (EH), three comfortable well equipped bedrooms.
