The good pub guide review
Often busy with contented customers, this is a popular inn with colourful décor and a satisfying range of good food and drink. The informal bar has a mix of wooden tables on old quarry tiles, flagstones and oak floorboards, prints and paintings on bold red walls and open fires; background music. Stools line the counter where they keep Black Sheep Best, Theakstons Best, York Guzzler and a guest beer on handpump, ten wines by the glass, nine malt whiskies and gin, and farm cider. The main dining room has a large woodburner in a huge brick fireplace, high-backed purple chairs around nice old tables on oak flooring, ornate mirrors and some striking artwork on exposed brick walls. French windows lead out to the terrace where there are plenty of seats and tables for summer dining. Upstairs, a private dining room has a two-way woodburner, a sitting room with boldly coloured sofas and doors leading to a terrace. The six modern bedrooms are comfortable and well equipped; one is dog-friendly. Disabled access. This belongs to the Provenance Inns & Hotels group.
The good pub guide food review
As well as breakfasts (8-11am), the highly regarded food includes lunchtime sandwiches, roast scallops and sticky pork with apple and creamed celariac, confit pheasant spring roll with spiced chutney, sharing boards, prawn and chorizo risotto with tomato vinaigrette, chicken in a creamy tarragon sauce with herbed roast potatoes, fillet of cod with pomme purée, roast cauliflower and mussels, braised beef in red wine jus, and puddings such as cherry and chocolate crème brûlée.
