Historic yet unpretentious, full of character and atmosphere, with six real ales and pubby food

Many of the customers here (including ourselves) have been using this characterful old tavern for years, and thankfully, nothing changes. The more spartan front room leads into a cosy, atmospheric, low-ceilinged back bar with high-backed black settles and an open fire. Fullers ESB, London Pride, Olivers Island and Seafarers plus a guest such as Dark Star Hophead on handpump, as well as 12 wines by the glass and 12 malt whiskies. The upstairs Dryden Room is often less crowded and has more seats (though fewer beers). There's a lively and well documented history: Dryden was nearly beaten to death by hired thugs outside, and Dickens made fun of the Middle Temple lawyers who frequented it when he was working in nearby Catherine Street.
