The good pub guide review

On summer days, the front terrace and garden of this expansive pub are little pieces of paradise, offering stunning views down to the narrowboats on the canal way below and across to the lakes that are part of the conservation area known as the Colne Valley Regional Park ' its own little piece of paradise for wildlife. Inside, the open-plan rooms have an attractive mix of cushioned dining chairs around all sizes and shapes of dark wooden tables, lots of prints, maps and pictures covering the walls, books on shelves, old glass bottles on windowsills and rugs on wood or parquet flooring. One room is hung with a large rug and some tapestries. There are daily papers to read, two cosy coal fires, big pot plants and fresh flowers. Half a dozen real ales on handpump served by friendly, efficient staff include St Austell Brunning & Price Traditional Bitter and frequently changing guests ' the likes of Redemption Trinity, Tring Side Pocket for a Toad and XT Hop Kitty ' plus 17 wines by the glass, 80 gins, 140 malt whiskies and farm cider. There's plenty of seating outside and space for children to run around, and a play tractor.

The good pub guide food review

A daily changing menu of appealing dishes (special diets catered for) includes a vegetarian meze plate, chicken caesar croquettes, braised feather of beef bourguignon with horseradish mash and buttered kale, roast pork tenderloin with colcannon potato and apple purée, grilled sea bass fillets with potato and shallot terrine, chicken, ham and leek pie with mash and white chicken gravy, and puddings such as chocolate and orange tart with passion-fruit sorbet and summer pudding with clotted cream.
