Interesting inn with lots of wines by the glass, good inventive food and fine surrounding walks; comfortable bedrooms

The open fires in the civilised but easy-going bars are a welcome refuge from the wild surroundings here ? the Atlantic is just 500 metres away. There's bold, strong paintwork, books on shelves, work by local artists, fresh flowers, and all manner of wooden dining chairs and tables and sofas on stripped boards or rugs. St Austell Tribute, a beer named for the pub (from Cornish Chough) and guests such as Skinners Lushingtons and Penny Come Quick on handpump, 14 wines by the glass or carafe and a couple of ciders; background music, darts and board games. The large back garden has plenty of seats. Bedrooms are comfortable and have views of the rugged moors or the sea. This is under the same ownership as the Old Coastguard in Mousehole (also in Cornwall) and the Griffin at Felinfach (Wales).

We have stayed here four times over the last twelve months and are still impressed by the delicious food and excellent, friendly service every time we go. The Gurnards Head deserves to be 'reinstated' as a main entry.

We had two meals here whilst on holiday in July/August this year. Both were superb. The beer was well-kept and there was a good choice of nice ales. The service could have been a little more attentive, especially on first arrival but there was nothing else to fault. This pub is clearly a 'main entry'!
