Delightful village local by the Salcombe estuary with local ales, very good food and a warm welcome for all
There's always a cheerful crowd of both locals and visitors in this charming, tiny pub, particularly at weekends. Among the little beamed bars, the main one has a log fire in an inglenook fireplace, a couple of settles and a blanket box on turkey rugs, and stools against the counter where they keep St Austell Trelawny, Salcombe Devon Amber, South Hams Wild Blonde and a seasonal guest from Otter on handpump, 21 wines by the glass, ten malt whiskies and a couple of local farm ciders; daily papers, darts and board games. The dining area to the right has a woodburning stove, settles and wheelback chairs around scrubbed wooden tables, and stone and cream walls decorated with maps. This leads to another small dining area and there's also a simply furnished Top Bar. Seats on the outside terrace overlook the water. They also offer an apartment (which can be on a self-catering basis). A Land Rover Defender can pick up customers from the nearby ferry and you can moor your boat on the village pontoon.
Bar food times: 12-2, 7 (5 in summer)-9; 12-5, 7-9 Sun; not Sun evening in winter
Imaginative food includes sandwiches, duck liver parfait with plum and red onion chutney, snails and wild mushrooms flambéed in cognac with a garlic butter sauce, beetroot and kale pearl barley risotto with parmesan, guinea fowl and smoked sausage on a traditional french vegetable stew, roasted loin and pulled pork with cauliflower mash, braised red cabbage and tarragon jus, gilthead bream fillet with mussels and paella rice, shellfish sauce and chorizo and puddings of the day.
