Good Pub Guide Recommended

Welcoming village pub run by father and daughter team with a nice little bar, several real ales and popular food; bedrooms

There can be few pubs with a view as stunning as the one over Bodiam Castle (National Trust) from the seats and tables in the back garden here. Inside, the bar has a roaring log fire in an inglenook fireplace, beams, wood panelling and a mix of chairs and tables on old brick or flagstoned floors. Four real ales from breweries such as Ewhurst Ales, Harveys, Rother Valley and Tonbridge on handpump and 20 wines by the glass. A dining room has sturdy wooden tables and chairs on more flagstones, while the games room (which opens on to the front terrace) has darts and pool; background music. The bedrooms are light and airy and one has a view over the castle.

This pub has improved greatly under the new manager. The beer has always been great, but the welcome before was on the cool side. The new manageress is extremely friendly and the local regulars have now returned to the pub!

Fantastic pub in a fantastic location. We visited The White Dog with our children and found the reception to be very warm and friendly. We ate in the garden overlooking views of Bodiam castle, the food was amazing and the kids food was of the same standad, not the usual frozen stuff. I will certainly be going back!

Good selection of real ales and wide menu sourced from local suppliers. Now a busy local with a great log fire. Bar menu in addition to restaurant menu. Young staff very friendly and efficient.

Charming pub.Excellent food .Very friendly family run pub.

Lovely people, beautiful location, but the food was bad, with the vegetables being in need of another 5 minutes' or more cooking, which takes some doing for baby veg. Al dente is one thing, but the carrots and broccoli were more like al cleaver.

Very very disappointing. I have been coming to the White Dog for many years but the whole experience yesterday represents a major deterioration. We arrived 5 minutes before our booking time to be told that "someone else had taken our table". My (frozen) scallops were over-cooked, the pork belly was burnt to a crisp, the bread was stale, there were too few serving staff (2 courses, 2 1/2 hours) and 3 of the menu items (one "special" and two off the main menu) had run out but we were only told that after our orders had been taken. Very poor. On a positive, the beer was still good (Harveys) and the wine was nice and reasonably priced but this pub should no longer be recommended in the Good Pub Guide until it has been re-evaluated. Such a shame.

Great place nice people good ale great views

Had lunch at the White Dog today and it was super. Superb food, excellent beer (white dog's own), friendly staff and dog friendly. Just as a good english country pub should be. The chef should be congratulated for his great menu and superb dishes. Thank you all Rob

Had lunch at the white dog yesterday and I have to say that it was very very average. The food came out exactly 2 mins after ordering vegetables were bland and the gravy was indescribable, I have never seen gravy like that before. I would return for a drink, but not to eat. Such a shame !

My daughter, son-in-law and wife had lunch yesterday at the White Dog, Ewhurst. We have lived in this area for some 40+ years and seen the White Dog go through variations in every aspect of attraction. But yesterday we had a superb meal, beautifully cooked and presented, the service was second to none and the price very reasonable. Just about the best place to eat in the whole of East Sussex.........professionalism to the highest level. Already planning our next visit.
