Pubby beamed rooms of considerable individuality, log fires, imaginative food and big, pretty garden; comfortable bedrooms

As ever, our readers are full of praise for all aspects of this lovely old inn. The five bedrooms, each with their own terrace, are proving extremely popular, and breakfast are very good. The small, low-beamed bar and dining rooms are civilised but informal with plenty of character. They're simply done out with plain wooden furniture and old settles on flagstones and coir matting, some harness and sporting prints on the stripped-brick walls and good log fires. Served by well trained staff, drinks include Adnams Southwold, Harveys Best and a changing weekly guest beer tapped from the cask, 14 wines plus sparkling wine and champagne by the glass from a good list, local Biddenden's cider and nine malt whiskies; background music in the restaurant and cards. A candlelit bare-boards restaurant has rustic décor and french windows that open into a newly extended conservatory looking over seats in the pretty garden, where raised beds contain herbs and other produce for the kitchen. At the front of the building is an extended and enclosed open-air dining courtyard. They've just opened a holiday cottage for rent. The gardens at Sissinghurst (National Trust) are nearby.

I visited this pub for Easter Sunday lunch with family. We were very disappointed with the food in the restaurant. The bread with the soup was stale, the soup was the consistency of baby food and about as tasty. The lamb was chewy and the veggie options on the menu were lacking in imagination. This was certainly not what I would expect from a Dining Pub of The Year as it sadly fell short of an average standard.
