Friendly canalside pub with cosy bar and local seasonal produce in a choice of dining areas

There's a proper community feel in this traditional pub overlooking the Montgomery Canal, and all customers are made to feel genuinely welcome. The old-fashioned, quarry-tiled bar on the left has squishy brown leather sofas by an old-style black range, upholstered cask seats around three small tables, and dozens of wrist- and pocket-watches hanging from the beams. A couple of steps lead up beyond a balustrade to a carpeted area, with armchairs and sofas around low tables, and a piano (which does get used); off to the left is a dining area with paintings by local artists. The main beamed dining room, with some stripped stone, is beyond another small bar with a coal-effect gas fire, and an amazing row of cushioned carved choir stalls complete with misericord seats. Joules Slumbering Monk and Stonehouse Cambrian Gold and Station Bitter on handpump, 11 wines by the glass, nine malt whiskies (including one from Wales) and a farm cider (in summer); quiet background music and board games. There are picnic-sets beside the water. The hands-on licensees also run a book exchange and offer a two-pint takeaway service.
