The good pub guide review

This charming and attractive town-centre inn is a splendid place to stay, with 22 serene, comfortable and well equipped bedrooms and two self-catering apartments. Some rooms offer glimpses of the River Severn below the nearby English Bridge, and breakfasts are good. Shrewsbury's shops and attractions are all within walking distance, as is sister operation the Boathouse. The décor throughout is most appealing and cleverly combines original 16th-c features with contemporary touches. The big-windowed bar consists of three linked levels, the lowest of which has armchairs on dark flagstones by a big inglenook; elsewhere, there's a cushioned settee or two, but mostly there are designer metal chairs at sturdy stripped tables on dark floorboards. A few modern paintings, plentiful flowers and church candles brighten up the restrained cream and grey décor, as do the friendly staff and background music. The atmosphere is gently civilised but friendly. There are three real ales on handpump ' perhaps Hobsons Twisted Spire, Salopian Oracle and Wye Valley Butty Bach or HPA, plus 14 wines by the glass and farm cider; new this year is a little wine bar and wine shop. Off quite a warren of corridors, the restaurant is in the older back part of the building with beams and timbering. There's also the lovely Crystal Room wth its silver-edged mirrors and transparent chairs, perfect for a party or reception. Outside, there are seats and tables under cover in a gravelled courtyard with olive trees and flowering pots dotted about.

The good pub guide food review

Delicious, carefully presented food using seasonal, local produce includes teriyaki cured salmon with cucumber, ginger and sesame tuille, chicken and duck liver parfait with red onion marmalade, buttered pollock with turnip fondant, haricot beans, tenderstem broccoli and mussel cream sauce, venison wellington with haunch ragoût, pomme dauphine and blackberries, wild mushroom risotto with Shropshire truffle, pan-fried duck breast with date purée, duck leg pomme anna, roast cauliflower and cavolo nero, and puddings such as banana soufflé with chocolate sorbet and lemon tart with Italian meringue and raspberry sorbet; they also offer a tasting menu (including a vegetarian version) and a set Sunday menu.
