Creative food and good drinks choice in refurbished Georgian pub, stylish bar and dining areas and hidden-away garden; bedrooms

Dating from 1729, this large refurbished corner pub has a good, bustling atmosphere in its U-shaped bar. There are big windows, high ceilings, wooden or tiled floors, green leather button-back wall seating and dark wooden dining chairs around pale-topped tables and groups of sofas and armchairs dotted here and there. Planked walls are hung with watercolours, there's a lot of cream paintwork throughout and some bookshelf wallpaper. Contemporary high chairs line the counter where helpful staff serve Brakspears Bitter and Oxford Gold and Ringwood Fortyniner on handpump, 14 wines by the glass, 11 malt whiskies and 17 gins; background music, TV and board games. The small paved back garden has pretty hanging baskets and bunting, candles in lanterns, cheerful scatter cushions and wooden tables and chairs. Bedrooms are comfortable and light and airy. This is sister pub to the Fox & Grapes in Wimbledon and Victoria in East Sheen (both in South London) and is part of the Jolly Fine Pub Group.

What the licensee says

The Malt House is the second venture onto the London pub scene by Bosi brothers Claude and Cedric. What was a fairly non-descript Victorian boozer has, since its reinvention in January 2013 by the Bosis, emerged as one of Fulham's most elegant dining destinations. A menu of beautifully presented and undeniably tasty British classics has justifiably won The Malt House high praise. Seasonality and provenance are vital and only a very select list of suppliers is favoured. The particularly thoughtful wine list (Finalist: Imbibe Wine List of the Year in association with Louis Roederer Champagne), unusually arranged by country, is also worthy of remark together with the pub's regularly updated cocktail menu. The Malt House has six luxurious double en-suite bedrooms, named with a nod to the celebrated brewing process. These are let on a bed and breakfast basis.
