Long-standing Chelsea landmark with easy-going bar and pretty restaurant, popular food and seats outside

Our readers enjoy their visits to this tucked-away pub, all citing the friendly atmosphere and interesting food. A central dark-panelled bar has high red chairs beside the counter with more around equally high tables on either side of the log-effect gas fire, button-back wall banquettes with cream and red patterned seats, little stools and plain wooden chairs around a medley of tables on black-painted floorboards, patterned wallpaper above a dado and a shelf with daily papers. There are ornate flower arrangements, a big portrait above the fire, several naval prints and quiet background music. Helpful staff serve Marstons 61 Deep, Shepherd Neame Whitstable Bay and Wychwood Hobgoblin on handpump and good wines by the glass. The light and airy restaurant area is a total contrast: high-backed pretty wall seats and plush dining chairs around light tables, an open kitchen, fish prints on pale blue paintwork, a second fireplace and an impressive skylight. A back garden has chunky benches and tables under a summer awning.
