Unspoilt 19th-c red-brick country local in same family since 1968; three or four good value cask-tapped ales from back brewery, enjoyable reasonably priced home-made food (not Sun evening or bank holiday evenings, and possible restrictions during busy times) including generous baps, range of casseroles and popular Weds curry night, cheerful welcoming staff, extended public bar with painted brick walls, tiled floor, open fire and glass-covered well, another straightforward but homely room with country pictures and small log fire; no credit cards or children; dogs welcome, seats on pretty front and back lawns (some under apple trees), vintage motorcycles Weds lunchtime, two bedrooms

Excellent food - only criticism is the price of some of the food, with little extra to pay between the jacket potatoes and the hot pots. Finding pub could have been aided by some signs. But once there the beer is well worth it. Be warned no plastic cards are taken.

The beer, is, as many would testify, I am sure, great value and of excellent quality. I have been here perhaps ten times and do feel that they could up the ante a bit with the food - it really is not that amazing. All told, I am not certain it deserves the Good Pub Guide star until it addresses the food issue. Bearable, but there is much better out there.

A village local, brewing its own doubtless excellent beer is to be applauded. However, on my visit, all entrance doors had hand written signs stating that the pub does not do this and do that. It does not permit under 14 year olds, it does not accept debit cards, it does not accept credit cards .... Not an appealing welcome. I have very well behaved children aged 8 and 13, but unlike dogs that ARE permitted entry into the bar areas, we were consigned to the disgustingly dirty, cold marquee in the garden. Naturally we left & the £100 or so that we would have spent on food and drinks was spent in an establishment that was more customer friendly. This is most certainly not a pub for families.

We cycled a long way to get here. I asked for a highchair at the bar and was told children aren't welcome and to go to a different pub nearby. We were told our son could make do on the grass outside but this was covered in rotten fruit and the pub dog was urinating all over the place. Also the food is very basic. It's a shame as my partner is a fan of ale so we thought we'd visit often but we wouldn't go back. Traditional yes, friendly, helpful, welcoming no - maybe to the older gentleman and dogs but no one else.

If you hate children this might be the pub for you - families are made to feel extremely unwelcome. As children aren't allowed inside we had to sit outside at some tables under a few apples trees at the back. If you put kids next to trees they will be tempted to climb them, but when our son did so he was promptly shouted at by the staff. Maybe they just don't like to see youngsters enjoying themselves. The food wasn't great either.
