Good Pub Guide Recommended

Creeper-covered pub with interestingly furnished rooms, well kept ales, good wines and enjoyable food; lovely bedrooms

Bedrooms here (named after previous owners of the Hursley Estate) are thoughtfully equipped and comfortable with original fireplaces and antiques. Turning to the left inside the door is a bar with a cushioned and shuttered window seat, high-backed plush green chairs and chunky leather stools around scrubbed tables on black floor slates, one high table with equally high chairs, and a raised fireplace with church candles on the mantelpiece above. Stools line the S-shaped, grey-painted counter where they serve Palmers Copper Ale, Ringwood Razorback and Sharps Doom Bar on handpump, 21 wines by the glass, 40 gins and ten malt whiskies; background music, daily papers and board games. A character lower room has a rather fine brick wall, a woodburning stove and wall banquettes with leather and tartan upholstery, and cushioned settles on floorboards. You can hire out the atmospheric downstairs skittle alley. There are seats and tables in the smart courtyard garden, plus parasols and heaters. The ancient village church is opposite.
