Lovely old coaching inn with a civilised feel, character bar and dining rooms, and a thoughtful choice of both drinks and food; spotless bedrooms

Our readers very much enjoy their visits to this handsome and civilised 300-year-old inn ? especially for the friendly welcome and first class food. Throughout, the original features and contemporary paintwork and furnishings blend well together. The two rooms of the bar have tartan-cushioned wall seats and pale wooden dining chairs around assorted tables, country and wildlife paintings, interesting stained-glass windows and a woodburning stove. Neat, efficient staff serve Ramsbury Bitter and Gold and a guest such as Downton Quadhop on handpump, a dozen wines by the glass and 20 malt whiskies. A cosy room between the bar and restaurant has much-prized armchairs and sofas before an open fire, a table of magazines and papers, a couple of portraits, stuffed birds and a squirrel, books on shelves and patterned wallpaper. Smart and relaxed, the restaurant is similarly furnished to the bar with white-clothed tables on bare boards or rugs, oil paintings and winter-scene photographs on beige walls; fresh flowers decorate each table. A nice surprise is the charming back café with white-painted farmhouse, tub and wicker chairs on floorboards, where they offer toasties, buns, cakes and so forth - it's very popular for morning coffee and afternoon tea. The garden has picnic-sets on a lower terrace and raised lawn, with more on a little terrace towards the front. Well equipped, restful bedrooms are named after game birds or fish.

What the licensee says

Whether you are looking for a country pub, fine dining or just to get away from it all for a night or two, The Bell is an ideal destination. Our light, spacious bar (home of the famous Ramsbury beers) retains its character as the original Country Inn and is the perfect retreat for an after-work drink, a pub lunch or relaxing with the Sunday papers. Everyone is made to feel welcome, be it our regulars, ladies who lunch or the impromptu visitor. Four-legged friends are also most welcome in the bar! Each of our nine guest rooms has its own distinct character and is named after a different game bird or fish as a nod to our lovely rural surroundings. Our sophisticated yet informal Modern British restaurant serves the best of British seasonal cuisine and always organic where possible. www.thebellramsbury.com

We just happened to stop at this pub after a long walk, and were very pleasantly surprised. The staff were friendly and helpful, the seating areas were nice, and the food we had was very good. One of us had an excellent salad, and the other had a rib eye steak sandwich with hand cut chips.

Currently closed for major refurbishment

Today this pub refused to take a booking for lunch next Thursday when they were told that one of our party had a guide dog for the blind. The dog could not go in the restaurant, but it could go in the bar. However, we could not reserve a table in the bar. How stupid and insensitive is this? Very How difficult is it to reserve a table in the bar? Not at all How illegal is this? Very - Part 3 of the Disabled Discrimination Act. Join me in going elsewhere, not just when we are out with our disabled friends.
