Good Pub Guide Recommended

Busy country inn with waterside gardens, civilised bar and dining rooms and a fine choice of drinks and food; bedrooms

This good-looking 17th-c inn is on the banks of the Thames (there are moorings for six boats and seats and tables by the water), which means it gets pretty busy, especially in warm weather, when you'll need to book a table in advance. The smart bar has exposed stone walls, beams and standing timbers, a woodburning stove with logs neatly piled to one side, leather armchairs and stools, scatter cushions on window seats, a large stuffed trout and bare boards and flagstones. Upholstered stools line the blue-painted counter where helpful staff serve a beer named for the pub (from Ramsbury), Loose Cannon Abingdon Bridge, Purity Pure Gold and Wychwood Hobgoblin Gold on handpump, 15 wines by the glass from a wide-ranging, carefully chosen list, a growing number of gins and 12 malt whiskies; background music and board games. Dining rooms have green-and-brown-checked chairs around a mix of nice wooden tables, fresh flowers and candlelight; the pale wood or blue-painted tongue-and-groove walls are hung with trout and stag prints, oars and mirrors. The six bedrooms (three open on to a small courtyard and four are suitable for dogs) are attractive and comfortable.
