The good pub guide review

Three boules courts, a skittle alley, a popular bar and a menu that goes well beyond simple pub food attract a loyal customer base from far and wide. The rambling, softly lit rooms have beams, standing timbers and flagstones, pews, settles and country kitchen chairs around an assortment of tables, and armchairs and sofas by roaring fires. Flying Monk Elmers, St Austell Tribute and Timothy Taylors Landlord on handpump, 20 wines by the glass from a thoughtful list, local cider and home-made lemonade; background music, darts, board games, TV and games machine. The skittle alley and boules courts outside are often in use by one of the many pub teams; a boules festival is held in July, as well as mangold hurling (similar to boules, but using cattle-feed turnips) and other events. The two pretty gardens include an extended terrace with wooden seating and parasols, where they hold barbecues and spit roasts. Wheelchair access.

The good pub guide food review

Tempting food includes lunchtime sandwiches, pea, broad bean and asparagus risotto, shredded duck salad with hoisin sauce and cashews, vegan vegetable paella with crispy almonds and piquillo peppers, burger (beef or chickpea and halloumi) with onion rings and fries, pork schnitzel with fried egg, capers and anchovies, monkfish scampi and fries, and puddings such as summer berry eton mess with honeycomb and raspberry purée, and chilled watermelon with mango sorbet and fruit purée. Thursday is steak night.
