18th-c inn with beams and timbering in character rooms, interesting food and drinks choice, friendly feel and seats in garden; bedrooms

At weekends in particular there are lots of chatty locals with their families and dogs here, but as a visitor you'll get just as warm a welcome. It's a gently civilised place with beamed, open-plan rooms connected by timbering (some have crash pads). The main bar area has leather and wood tub chairs around a table in one window, a long cushioned settle in another, and big flagstones and stools by the bar where they keep Otter Bitter and a changing guest on handpump and good wines by the glass. An end room, also with flagstones, has more tub chairs, wall seating and contemporary paintwork on planked walls; TV. The dining rooms are to the left of the bar: one long room has huge wall photos of horses and there are tartan banquettes, cushioned dining chairs around wooden tables on bare boards, a woodburning stove, hanging lanterns and bowler-hat lights. A room to the back of the inn called the Winning Enclosure has horse-racing wall photos and a large raised fireplace. The partly covered terrace has good quality seats and tables. Quiet bedrooms, handy for Ascot and Henley, face the garden.
