The good pub guide review

A bustling, well run local, with a neat and friendly bar and dining room with heavy beams and timbers, a woodburning stove and an open fire, all sorts of wooden dining chairs around tables of every size on bare floorboards, and a comfortable sofa and armchairs. Adnams Southwold and Woodfordes Wherry plus two guest beers such as Greene King Old Speckled Hen and Timothy Taylors Landlord on handpump, eight wines by the glass, Aspall's cider and cocktails; they hold a music and beer festival in May. Terraces have picnic-sets and the garden is pretty. Walkers enjoy the nearby Icknield Way, coming here for refreshment afterwards. There are five attractive, comfortable bedrooms in a restored thatched barn, and readers have been quick to voice their enthusiasm.

The good pub guide food review

Pleasing food includes lunchtime ciabattas, smoked duck with spring onion and rocket salad and hoisin dressing, traditional prawn cocktail, home-made pie of the day (chicken and mushroom or ham and leek) with mash, steak burger with cheese, bacon, onion rings and home-made coleslaw, steaks with a choice of sauce, and puddings such as double chocolate brownie with salted caramel ice-cream and chocolate sauce and sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice-cream.
