Good Pub Guide Recommended

Tile-hung village pub with interesting food and a good mix of customers; bedrooms

Although many are here for the good, up-to-date food, there are always lots of chatty drinkers too. The bustling, beamed bar has a couple of standing timbers, brown squashy sofas, pine tables and chairs on the stone floor and a small woodburning stove in a brick fireplace. Greyhound Good Ordinary Bitter, Hammerpot Mosaic Pale and Long Man Best Bitter on handpump are served from the attractive herringbone brick counter, alongside a local cider, ten wines by the glass plus prosecco, champagne, interesting soft drinks and farm cider. To the right of the bar, the restaurant (with more beams) has an ornamental woodburner in a brick fireplace, a few photographs, chunky pine tables and chairs, a couple of cushioned pews and a shelf of books; steps lead down to an additional dining room; background music and board games. The pub dog is called Chops. A new straightforwardly furnished dining conservatory, facing the village green, is light and airy, and there are picnic-sets in the back garden.

Excellent pub, excellent staff, very busy but pleasant to be in. The food was excellent and it was nice to have a rare steak that was properly cooked. Delicious and melted in the mouth. We were visiting the nearby Knepp Estate and staying in their camping ground and were very pleased we'd chosen to eat at the Crown Inn. Recommended.
