Airy bar and cosy dining rooms in bustling pub with excellent food, helpful service and pretty garden

Behind the Victorian façade of this family-run pub are Tudor beams and a huge inglenook dated 1537. The airy, simply furnished front bar has a green leather chesterfield, plush stools around just three tables on parquet flooring, a warming woodburning stove, fresh flowers and nightlights and maybe background jazz. Badger Best and a seasonal guest on handpump, 15 wines (some organic) by the glass, ten malt whiskies and local cider; board games. A garden room leads off with wicker chairs, leather wall banquettes and a dresser full of home-made jellies and chutney. Several dining rooms towards the back are interlinked and cosy, with beams, brick floors, high-backed dining chairs around wooden-topped painted tables and country paintings (which are for sale); a small room to the right of the entrance is similarly furnished. In warm weather, head for the lovely landscaped garden with its picnic-sets, wendy house and fine country views. Disabled access. The pub is handy for Nymans (National Trust).

Don't be put off by the unexciting exterior onto the road - once inside there is a super pub-restaurant, with a splendid menu to suit all tastes, a great welcome, and terrific service. Well-kept Hall & Woodhouse Badger. Couldn't be better.
