The good pub guide review

There's a buoyant countrified atmosphere to this brick and tile-hung pub. To keep the mixed crowd of office workers, theatre-goers and couples happy, efficient, friendly staff offer a fine choice of drinks: Harveys Best and St Austell Proper Job on handpump with regularly changing guests, around 30 wines by the glass (including fizz), 200 malt whiskies, 60 gins, 30 rums, 30 bourbons and farm cider ' and tasty, brasserie-style food. The single, large, early 20th-c room has a long central bar, a nice collection of sizeable dark wood tables and comfortable chairs on a stripped-wood floor, bookcases and plenty of interesting old prints and photographs above a dark wood-panelled dado on pale walls. A spacious, bright conservatory has similar furniture and lots of hanging baskets, while the flower-filled back terrace has plenty of garden furniture. Parking is in the council car park next door, as the small one by the pub is for staff and deliveries only.

The good pub guide food review

Good, modern food includes sandwiches, pan-fried scallops with pea purée and shredded ham hock, chicken caesar croquettes with parmesan and anchovy salad, steak burger with coleslaw and fries, grilled sea bass fillets with potato and shallot terrine and chervil and lemon cream sauce, pork and leek sausages with mash, pea and mint tortellini with garden pea velouté and asparagus, and puddings such as chocolate and orange tart with passion-fruit sorbet and lemon meringue roulade with raspberry sorbet.
