Handsome coaching inn with a thoughtful choice of drinks, first class food and plenty of outside seating; bedrooms

Set in a lovely downland valley, this whitewashed inn is a gently civilised place for a drink or a meal. The bar area has a relaxed atmosphere, leather armchairs in front of a woodburning stove and daily papers on the light oak counter where friendly staff serve Tipsy Horse (named for the pub from Ringwood) plus Dark Star Hophead and Marstons 61 Deep on handpump and 18 good wines by the glass. Just off here, a room with leather button-back wall seats and mate's and other dark wooden dining chairs has all sorts of country knick-knacks: stuffed animals, china plates, riding boots, flower paintings, dog drawings, stone bottles and books on shelves. The dining room to the other side of the bar has a huge painting of a galloping white horse, a long suede wall banquette, high-backed settles creating stalls, elegant chairs, lots of mirrors and big metal chandeliers. Throughout, there are fat candles in lanterns, flagstones and coir carpet, beams and timbering, and animal skin throws; background music and board games. A two-level terrace has dark grey rattan-style seats around glass-topped tables under parasols among pretty flowering tubs; an area up steps has rustic benches and tables and there are picnic-sets on grass at the front. Each of the comfortable, contemporary and light bedrooms has a little private courtyard (two have a hot tub). Good surrounding walks.

Wonderfully kept beer and very tasty food. Visited with my partner on a Saturday lunchtime. Not overly busy which was good as hadn't made a booking. We each had a game course, my partner had the grouse whereas I had the venison which was from the specials board. The grouse was fine but the venison was a bit tough. The venison was exceptionally expensive at just 5p short of £27!! The cost for a two course lunch for two people plus two glasses of wine and two pints of bitter? £86.73 (with a service charge), so be prepared!!
