Traditional local with interesting food and drink, friendly staff and suntrap back courtyard

Luckily for the many loyal customers here, things are running as smoothly as ever. The unassuming and friendly bar, which is long and narrow, has a mix of pubby tables and seats, local photographs on pale blue plank panelling at one end and nice, mainly local prints (for sale) on walls above a coal-effect stove at the snug inner end; there's also a small front alcove. The ornately carved bar counter, with comfortable leatherette stools, dispenses Sharps Own, Skinners Betty Stogs and a guest such as Tintagel Pendragon on handpump, ten reasonably priced wines by the glass, 20 malt whiskies and two local ciders; background music, darts, board games and TV. The sheltered back courtyard is not large but has some attractive and unusual plants, and is a real suntrap (with an extendable awning and outside heaters). You can park in several of the nearby streets or the (free) town car park. The 13th-c church is worth a look and the ancient river bridge, a few metres away, is lovely.

A really special find! Everything superb from start to finish, were passing and called in and were even found a place in the quaint restaurant. Will definitely be back!

I got a genuinely warm welcome on my lunchtime visit, even though they were coping with a major beer delivery and I was dripping all over the bar (raining as only Cornwall can). As well as beer & wine, they also have Thatchers Gold cider on tap. My lunchtime brie & bacon baguette was well stuffed with melting brie and good local bacon.
