Fine coaching inn with character bars, popular food, thoughtful drinks choice and seats in a pretty courtyard; bedrooms

Our favourite spot in this lovely 17th-c coaching inn remains the neatly kept right-hand bar which has a great deal of character: bow windows, sturdy upright wooden seats on flagstone floors, a big log fire in a handsome stone fireplace, partly stripped walls with large prints of sailing and winter coaching scenes, and a giant pair of blacksmith's bellows. This room has been opened up with the bistro to create a bar-cum-dining area with a bustling, chatty atmosphere. Digfield Fools Nook, Fullers London Pride, Greene King IPA and Old Speckled Hen and Oakham Bishops Farewell on handpump, several malt whiskies, 15 wines by the glass, 11 gins and farm cider; service is helpful and welcoming. Other rooms include a residents' bar and a restaurant; background music, board games and TV. Through the fine coach arch is a very pretty sheltered courtyard with tables, and a well that dates from Roman times. The bedrooms mix old-world charm with modern facilities and three are on the ground floor overlooking the garden.
