Country inn with produce from own farm, tasty food and local ales, friendly service and seats outside; bedrooms

The River Nene and one of the biggest lock gates in Europe are just across the road from here and there are plenty of good nearby walks, making this a fine place for lunch. The bar has sofas, comfortable seats and an open fire and Gun Dog Jacks Spaniels, Pitchfork Puxton Cross and a changing guest on handpump, 15 wines by the glass and three farm ciders. The restaurant leads off and has an open kitchen, solid wooden dining chairs around farmhouse tables, prints on red-painted walls and a monthly live pianist; background music and bar games. A deli counter offers their own produce and treats from further afield too. Outside, there are brightly painted picnic-sets under a gazebo. The eight bedrooms have vaulted ceilings and their own balconies, and they also have a campsite.

We chose this from the Good Pub Guide and went for Sunday late lunch yesterday. The pub is in the process of updating so hard to give an aesthetic opinion. However, the staff were great, Jorg said his roast was one of the best he had tasted. The meals were enormous and served hot too. Tables were spaced out, sauces/salt/pepper was in separate sachets, mains menu was reduced and we had to pay at the bar but it felt SO normal and had a great buzz too.
