Unassuming from the outside but with character bars, real ales and interesting food; comfortable bedrooms

Right by the village green with its big duck ponds, this is an easy-going place with three woodburning stoves for winter and plenty of outside furniture for summer. The relaxed bars have leather sofas and armchairs, a mix of antique wooden dining tables and chairs on flagstones or stripped-wooden floors, a very high-backed settle, 18th- and 19th-c quirky prints and cartoons, and plenty of beams and standing timbers. At the back of the pub is the Blenheim room, just right for a private group, and there's also a candlelit dining room. Adnams Broadside and Ghost Ship, Woodfordes Wherry and a guest ale on handpump and a dozen wines by the glass, served from a bar counter made of great slabs of polished tree trunk; background music, TV, darts and board games. Tables and chairs on the pub's front terrace take in the pleasant setting and there are more seats and a play area in the enclosed back garden. The nine bedrooms are named after famous local sportsmen and airmen from the World War II air base in Massingham. Wheelchair access.

An excellent place for Sunday lunch with a relaxed ambience. Although the range of starters was somewhat limited, there was lots of choice for main courses beside the usual roast meats, including interesting vegetarian options and the vegetables were superb. The puds were delicious and nothing was too much trouble for the friendly, attentive staff.

As 'Deryclare' highlights, this is an excellent pub for Sunday lunch serving well cooked roasts (beef and pork when we visited) with good roast potatoes and four other vegetables. There are also 3 or 4 other main courses to choose from along with a similar number of starters and deserts plus a few sandwiches. It is a child friendly as they have their own menu and the staff can provide pens / pencils / paper or even some games such as dominoes to keep them amused. The young staff are friendly and efficient who seem keen to ensure that you have an enjoyable meal.

Great pub very friendly, and excellent beer.

Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. The best chips (triple cooked in beef dripping) I have tasted. Try the pickled eggs - duck sized and still with a runny yolk!! Food slightly "nouvelle" but is fresh and worth the detour. This is in addition to a good range of perfectly served beers (some very local). Slightly quirky but well worth the effort to find this place

Tried the North Norfolk Restaurant Week special menu last night at Dabbling Duck. It was a complete rip off as the mains had neither veg or potatoes so the total cost of the special menu would have been more expensive than the normal menu. Very poor value indeed. Will not bother to return.
