Particularly well run inn with log fires and interesting furnishings, imaginative food, a fine range of drinks and stylish seating on heated terrace; well equipped bedrooms

Not surprisingly, this lovely old inn is a favourite with so many customers. All aspects remain first class, from the well trained, friendly staff to the fine range of drinks and excellent food and on to the stylish bedrooms. The two main bars have distinct character and simple charm, with an open fire and woodburning stove, old quarry tiles or coir flooring, cushioned wall seating and wooden tables and chairs, candles on mantelpieces and daily papers. There are stools against the bar where locals enjoy Adnams Broadside and Southwold, Greene King Old Speckled Hen and Woodfordes Wherry on handpump; also, a dozen wines by the glass, around 20 gins (including local ones), seasonal cocktails and jugs of sangria, local cider and fresh fruit juices. A small wood-floored back room has old sports equipment, the landlord's sporting trophies and photos of the pub-sponsored village cricket team. The civilised little restaurant (decorated in soft greys) has cushions and picture mounts with splashes of bright green and cream candles in antique brass candlesticks. At the back of the building, two rooms make up the bustling Garden Room, with sofas, wooden farmhouse and white-painted dining chairs around a mix of tables, church candles in large lanterns, attractive striped blinds and doors that lead to the pretty walled garden. Here there are plenty of contemporary seats and tables underneath cream parasols, outdoor heaters, colourful herbaceous borders and a wooden galleon-shaped climbing structure for children. Bedrooms are spacious and individually decorated and breakfasts very good. Disabled lavatories and wheelchair ramp. This is sister pub to the Bank House in King's Lynn.

25 February 2019

We had booked a table for 12.30pm for eight and a high chair for my mother in laws birthday. Of these eight, two were children aged five years old and one two year old. We arrived on time to two very polite members of staff, one gentleman and a lady called Hannah, we didn't get his name. They both made us feel very welcome and interacted with the children and showed us to the table and took our drinks orders and then food orders. Both were very pleasant and made us feel very welcome and interacted with the children making them laugh. From then on it went down hill rapidly. The starters took a long time to come and then be cleared. The gentleman who had been serving us then disappeared and another man arrived. The mains arrived and we were told the plates were hot and it would have appeared so as the staff were carrying them with napkins as I would expect with hotplates, I checked my 2 year old's plate and it was cold which was pleasantly surprising as normally most plates are too hot for children, however, the peas that were in a pot for each of them were almost cold but were ok for the children to eat straight away should they have chosen too. However, the rest of the plates were cold. We ordered a scampi and chips this was cold and had to be sent back to the kitchen, we waited for someone to come but ended up taking the plate to find someone, The Lamb Shanks were edible as were warm to eat straight away but not hot, one of the sauces appeared to have caught on the bottom of the pan as it had black bits in it with a not very nice after taste to it, the other was ok. The calves liver was well cooked not seared as advertised but again not hot. We complained to your staff we all ate our meal whilst waiting for the return of the scampi, this eventually arrived back hot but most of the table had then finished their main, otherwise we would have had to send the whole table back. . At this point we were told that we would receive a discount at the end of the meal. Eventually our plates were cleared and asked if we would like to see the dessert menu. We ordered our desserts and then had to go and find one of the staff to ask where they were as it was taking a long time at this point we had been there nearly two hours the children were starting to get bored even though we had brought things for them to do. When the man returned from the kitchen he said that the chefs were creating all our puddings from scratch and would be with us as soon as they were ready! We ordered Marshmallows with a chocolate dipping sauce, these do not take a lot of creating, chocolate brownie that was just warm and was not created from scratch but prior to service, sticky toffee pudding yes they might have made that from scratch but I would expect that to have been prepped in advance ready to cook when ordered, ice cream which would have come from the freezer, creme brulee which would have been prepared in advance and the top blow torched before being ordered, the black forest torte again would have been prepared before service and tub of children's ice cream again out of the freezer, this was soft so had been out of the freezer for some time. When having our puddings served he forgot the ice cream/sorbet that came with the torte and the snide comment from your member of staff was completely out of order saying 'that's what happens when you're being rushed' . I would hate to see how he copes when you have a full dining room as we couldn't see more than 6 tables full at the time. We ate our puddings were asked for if we would like tea of coffee which we refused as we had had enough of the attitude that this member of staff was showing us. My father in law went to pay the bill, again the member of staffs attitude was not good and no offer of discount was made. My father in law paid the bill and we left, and will not be returning!
