16th-c inn with atmospheric furnishings, super wines by the glass, real ales and delicious food; smart bedrooms

This is a first class all-rounder and our readers enjoy it very much. It's a gently civilised old place with excellent food and lovely bedrooms but at its heart is a lively and friendly main bar with plenty of chatty locals. There are ancient beams and other atmospheric furnishings (high-backed wooden settles, gate-leg or pedestal tables), a warming log fire in a stone inglenook, ancient flagstones and sporting memorabilia relating to rugby, racing, cricket and hunting. To the left, a drinking area has built-in wall benches, stools and dining chairs around wooden tables, rugs on bare boards and a woodburning stove. Attentive, welcoming staff serve Hook Norton Hooky and guests such as Coach House Coachmans Best Bitter, Froth Blowers Bar-King Mad and Prescott Hill Climb on handpump, a super wine list with ten by the glass, 20 malt whiskies and an extensive gin collection; background music, board games and cards. There are seats out in front and rattan-style armchairs around tables in the pretty back courtyard garden with a pagoda; maybe free-ranging bantams and ducks. If you stay here they offer cosy rooms above the inn and more spacious ones in the courtyard, and the setting (opposite the green in a tranquil village) is most attractive. The same professional licensees also run the Swan at Swinbrook (in Oxfordshire).

What the licensee says

The Kings Head Inn is the classic English pub that you always hope you'll find, but seldom do.This privately-owned Cotswolds Inn dates back to the 16th century and was originally built as a cider house. Warming open fires welcome guests in the winter, and they can enjoy local ale around the bustling bar or perhaps an award-winning meal. On less chilly days customers often spill out onto the famous, and gloriously picturesque, village green. This is a great place for a relaxing drink or a tasty meal, but its twelve attractive bedrooms also make it an excellent place to stay.Archie and Nicola Orr-Ewing, have devoted an extraordinary amount of time and energy into restoring and improving this beautiful pub to ensure an enjoyable experience for their guests. They'd be delighted to welcome you personally if you have a moment.
