A fine mix of customers for beautifully set inn with riverside gardens, local ales, popular food and friendly service

With helpful staff offering a genuinely warm welcome to thirsty students, muddy walkers and their dogs and those aiming for a good meal, this thatched 17th-c limestone pub is a special place. The heavily beamed bar has a huge, curved red leather chesterfield in front of a woodburning stove, a very high-backed settle, little stools around tables and fine old flagstones. Hook Norton Hooky and guests such as Prescott Hill Climb and XT Eight on handpump and plenty of wines by the glass; background music and board games. Leading off here are the dining areas with bare floorboards, scatter cushions on built-in wall seats, wheelbacks and other chairs around light tables, a second woodburner with logs piled to the ceiling next to it and a fine brass chandelier. They hold an annual beer and cider festival, outdoor film evenings in summer and a folk festival. A partly covered terrace has seats and tables, there are picnic-sets on the lawn (which runs down to the Thames Path where there are moorings), a summer bar and an attractively furnished marquee. It's said that this might be one of the first places that Lewis Carroll gave public readings of Alice in Wonderland.

What the licensee says

www.the-perch.co.uk. A classic riverside country pub in the city of Oxford, on the ancient and beautiful Port Meadow. In late spring the meadow is carpeted with buttercups and wildflowers. Horses, cattle and geese graze the meadow. The Perch has been a haunt for our best writers and a frequent refuge for Inspector Morse. Lewis Carroll rowed to the pub 1862, While journeying, Carroll began to make up a story that later became Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.Find locals eating locally sourced British food alongside great beers and delicious wines. Roaring fires, stripped floorboards and low ceilings set the scene. Championing English wine is a passion. In the summer find a spot on the terrace looking onto the garden or dappled shade from three magnificent willows. In winter try venison haunch with a hedgerow dessert snuggled up by crackling fires. The British pub at its best.

A busy pub with a mixture of patrons which welcomed my Husband and I after finding this delightful old place from the guide listings. We ordered the sharers board for the starter which had a range of meats; plenty for 2. We chose the Ox belly and roast lamb for main which were both mouth watering with flavours. This is a real gem, we left with warm satisfied appetites and relaxed from the astmosphere; we will return for more courses.
