Good Pub Guide Recommended

Smart old pub with handsome oak garden rooms, antiques-filled bars, local beers and contemporary food; bedrooms

The elegant, comfortable and warm bedrooms in this civilised, 400-year-old pub are in a smartly converted stone barn and five are beside the River Windrush. The little bar has simple antique furnishings, settles and benches, an open fire and (in an alcove) a stuffed swan; locals do drop in for a pint and a chat. As the inn is owned by the Devonshire Estate, there are plenty of interesting Mitford family photographs blown up on the walls. A small dining room leads off from the bar to the right of the entrance, and there are also two garden rooms with high-backed beige and green dining chairs around pale wood tables and views across the garden and orchard. Battledown Amber Ale, Butcombe Rare Breed and Hook Norton Hooky on handpump, nine wines by the glass, farm ciders and local draught lager; staff are first class. Background music, board games and TV. The outdoor seats and circular picnic-sets make the best of the position by a bridge over the river. The Kings Head in Bledington (Gloucestershire) is run by the same first class licensees.

What the licensee says

This traditional pub contributes as much to the character of this rather perfect village as the church, cricket pitch or surrounding countryside. As well as regular local customers from Swinbrook and the surrounding area, The Swan welcomes visitors from much further afield who are looking to share in a unique experience. Whether you want to escape for a quiet evening drink, are looking for fresh, locally-sourced food or want to make use of our beautiful accommodation as a base for exploring Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and the Cotswolds, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more idyllic location. A short distance from the picturesque town of Burford, yet a million miles from the bustle of the tourist trail, this is the perfect place to relax, socialise and renew old acquaintances - somewhere you can tuck yourself away and simply enjoy!
