Delightful pub with two cosy character rooms, six real ales and well liked bar food

There's always a good mix of customers here and because it's the oldest drinking house in the city (dating from 1242), it has a lot of charm and character. Two small bar rooms are beamed and partly panelled with thousands of vintage ties on the walls, a winter coal fire and a chatty, bustling atmosphere. Friendly, helpful staff serve up to six real ales on handpump from a fine pewter bar counter: Fullers Day Dreamer, ESB, HSB, London Pride and Olivers Island and a changing guest. Staff are friendly and helpful; board games. A large terraced back garden has seats under parasols; summer barbecues.

Arrived for an early evening meal after an exceptionally hot day in Oxford and immediately felt relaxed and welcomed. Chose the “Grizzly burger” and Prospect beer. The food is cooked to order but service is prompt. The burger had a good depth of flavour and the portion size was sensible. The beer complemented it well. The coffee to follow matched any I had enjoyed all day in a town that seems to care about such things. The pub was lively but not overly noisy and the garden, showing a World Cup match, was well patronised but spectators noise didn’t intrude inside the pub. However, there was a fairly regular procession of men visiting the gents which was accessed through the room in which we ate and the banging toilet door was a bit of an intrusion. The staff were all superb - friendly and professional.
