Unique village local, with good food and drinks, and lovely unspoilt feel

A timeless old favourite, this was originally a stable block and is hidden away among some of Hampstead's most villagey streets. The old-fashioned front bar has a dark sagging ceiling, brown and cream panelled walls (decorated with old advertisements and a few hanging plates), open fires, bare boards and secretive bays formed by partly glazed partitions. The slightly more intimate back room, named after the painter George Romney, has an embossed red ceiling, panelled and etched glass alcoves, and ochre-painted brick walls covered with small prints; lots of board and card games. Fullers ESB, London Pride and Olivers Island plus a guest or two such as Adnams Ghost Ship and Liberation Ale on handpump, as well as 15 malt whiskies and 14 wines by the glass from a good wine list. The upstairs dining room has table service at the weekend, as does the rest of the pub on Sundays. There are benches on the pavement outside.

Esteemed in exquisite surroundings, unfortunately as other's are now finding, the food is NOT up to basic standard's. STAFF are oblivious to basic understanding of many dishes that locals and tourists always use to enjoy. Though polite,STAFF now have the attitude THAT they decide what's best to have on the menu and this is causing genuine annoyance to many previous once loyal clientele who now frequent other's pubs in Hampstead and Kenwood. WHAT a shame. The magic has long disappeared here
