The good pub guide review
The sheer delight of enjoying quality fish and seafood at the ocean's edge in Northumberland's kipper capital has brought the Jolly Farmer an enviable reputation and plenty of customers. The simple, comfortably furnished bar with its button-back banquettes, open brickwork and bare boards provides a fire-warmed refuge for winter coast-path walkers, and the pine-furnished upstairs restaurant has huge windows overlooking the water. In summer, there are plenty of picnic tables on the grass outside with views to both sea (look out for dolphins) and harbour ' you will need to arrive early on busy days to secure a good spot; background music. Black Sheep and Mordue Workie Ticket and a changing guest on handpump are served by helpful, welcoming staff. They have a couple of fishermen's cottages for rent, as well as a café and gift shop opposite and a new fish and chip van. This is a fine base for walkers and the route from here along the cliff to ruined Dunstanburgh Castle (English Heritage) is popular.
The good pub guide food review
A short menu supplemented by evening specials is dominated by seafood. Sandwiches, including the signature crab, are served until 4pm and luxury sharing platter. Starters might include Lindisfarne oysters, queen scallop popcorn, Shetland mussels, kipper scotch egg and devilled crab toast; among the mains are salmon and haddock fishcakes, crab salad, whole Craster kipper, luxury fish pie, lobster salad, vegetable wellington, sirloin steak and pressed belly pork, and desserts include sticky toffee pudding and eton mess.
