In a charming square with good simple food and own-brew beers; best to check winter opening times

If you're lucky enough to be here in warm weather, you can make the best of the lovely position. Tables outside this row of converted fishermen's cottages look across the sloping village green and down to the sea and you can walk from here along the massive stretch of empty, beautiful beach with views all the way to Dunstanburgh Castle (English Heritage). Inside, the plainly furnished but cosy bare-boards bar on the right has nautical charts on dark pink walls, while another simple room on the left has beams, hop bines, some bright modern pictures on stripped-stone walls and a woodburning stove in a stone fireplace. They brew their own beers and usually have four on handpump at any one time from a choice of 26 - maybe Ship Inn Dolly Daydream, Indian Summer and a seasonal guest as well as a guest from another brewery; also 14 malt whiskies and half a dozen wines by the glass. There's darts and dominoes. It can get extremely busy at peak times, so it's best to book in advance, and there might be a queue for the bar. There's no nearby parking from May to September, but there is a car park up the hill.
