Good Pub Guide Recommended
Splendidly restored and full of interest, usefully open all day, real ales and ciders and well liked food
It's worth having a good look around this handsome old building before you decide where to sit as there are over half a dozen rooms spread over two floors, giving plenty of companionable places for chatty relaxation. There are cushioned church pews, leather elbow chairs, long oak settles, sofas, armchairs or, to watch the passing scene, a big bow-window seat; carpet, bare boards and ancient red and black tiles plus William Morris wallpaper. There's plenty to look at too, from intriguing antique Police News and other prints (plenty of Nelson, of course) to the collections of mullers, copper kettles and other homely bric-a-brac in the heavy-beamed former kitchen with its Aga. Fullers London Pride and Oakham JHB with guest ales such as Black Sheep, Caledonian Dr Bobs Magic Potion and Second Line Brewing Medley on handpump; also 13 gins with half a dozen tonics, four farm ciders and 18 wines by the glass. Background music, TV and board games. Disabled access.
Bar food times: 12-2.30, 6-9; 9-9 Sat; 9-8 Sun
Tasty food includes ciabattas, nibbles such as pigs in blankets with rosemary potatoes and camembert with chutney, sharing boards, sweet potato, chickpea and spinach curry, beef in ale pie, chargrilled chicken with parmesan bonbons, crispy parma ham, soft boiled egg, caesar salad and croutons, harissa lamb tacos with sour cream, pineapple salsa and guacamole, beer-battered haddock and chips, lambs liver and bacon, and puddings such as lemon cheesecake with berry compote and banoffi ripple sundae.
