Good Pub Guide Recommended

Smart dining pub with a proper bar and other elegant rooms, a fine wine list, impressive food and friendly staff; stylish bedrooms

Head for the church to find this civilised dining pub, which has been here since the 16th c. Of course, many customers are here for the excellent food but there's a proper public bar too, and plenty of chatty locals. This bar has rafters, a couple of eye-catching rugs on flagstones, bar stools by the slate-topped counter, Barngates Tag Lag, Bowness Bay Swan Blonde and Marstons Wainwright on handpump, 15 wines (including champagne and prosecco) by the glass, 15 malt whiskies and local damson gin. To the right are two linked carpeted and beamed rooms with well spaced country pine furniture of varying sizes (including a big refectory table), and walls that are painted in restrained neutral tones with an attractive assortment of prints; winter log fire, woodburning stove, lots of fresh flowers and daily papers. On the left, the wooden-floored, light and airy restaurant area has comfortable high-backed leather dining chairs; background music. Tables and seats on a terrace are stepped into the hillside and overlook the pretty Lyth Valley. Bedrooms are lovely and well equipped and breakfasts first class.

What the licensee says

The Punch Bowl Inn and Restaurant at Crosthwaite is situated in the heart of the delightfully unspoilt Lyth Valley countryside just outside Windermere in the Lake District. It has been an Inn since 1829 and is next door to the Parish Church of St Mary's. It offers a unique blend of old and new with 5-star accommodation in the form of nine individually styled bedrooms. The Punch Bowl prides itself on serving locally sourced, 100% homemade food. Its award-winning 2AA rosette menus are available every day in both the contemporary style formal restaurant and traditional relaxed bar areas with sink-in leather sofas and open fire. There's a good selection of local real ales, guest beers, and fine wines by the glass. Service at the Punch Bowl is always friendly and attentive as befits a quality English country pub. www.the-punchbowl.co.uk

Very much a dining experience as compared to the more "pubby" atmosphere that one finds at the Masons Arms over the hill. Nevertheless, good selection of cask ales and very friendly welcome and service throughout. Food was faultless, with a cheese soufflé, plate of Iberico Bellota hams and duck breasts standing out. Fully deserving of its high rating in the guide.

Very much a dining pub with terrific food. Well deserved winner of Cumbria Dining Pub of the Year. Must mention the raspberry souffle.
