Directions

Strawberry Bank, a few miles S of Windermere between A592 and A5074; perhaps the simplest way to find the pub is to go uphill W from Bowland Bridge (which is signposted off A5074) towards Newby Bridge and keep right, then left at the staggered crossroads - it's then on your right, below Gummer's How; OS Sheet 97 map reference 413895

Wonderful views, beamed bar with plenty of character, interesting food and a good choice of ales and wines; self-catering cottages and apartments

As always, we've had warmly enthusiastic reports on this very well run Lakeland pub; you'll have to arrive early to grab a seat with stunning views over the Winster Valley to the woods below Whitbarrow Scar. The main bar has plenty of character, with low black beams in the bowed ceiling, and country chairs and plain wooden tables on polished flagstones. A small lounge has oak tables and settles to match its fine Jacobean panelling. There's also a plain little room beyond the serving counter with pictures and a fire in an open range, a family room with the atmosphere of an old parlour, and an upstairs dining room; background music and board games. Bowness Bay Swan Blonde, Cumbrian Legenday Loweswater Gold, Hawkshead Bitter and Marstons Wainwright on handpump, quite a few foreign bottled beers, 14 wines by the glass, nine malt whiskies, 16 gins and farm cider; service is friendly and helpful. You can sit at rustic benches and tables on the heated and covered terrace, and the self-catering cottages and apartments are stylish and comfortable and share the same fine outlook.

Annual Autumn visit to the Lake District and the Masons Arms is the one essential pub we always return to. Remote location up long twisty roads but thoroughly worth it: charming atmosphere in bars downstairs with more "restaurant" style interconnecting rooms upstairs. Good selection of beers and wines. Wide ranging menu with regularly changing specials. The size of the ribs starter portion is daunting! Excellent shoulder of lamb and sea bream on our visit today. Service is speedy and efficient. Very reliable and child friendly.
