Good Pub Guide Recommended

Bustling and friendly village pub with cricketing paraphernalia, a thoughtful choice of drinks, enjoyable food and seats on a back terrace

Opposite the village church, this is a welcoming place with a good mix of chatty customers. The two rooms of the parquet-floored bar are divided by a big chimney, with a woodburning stove in each, nice cushioned seats in bow windows, a mix of pale farmhouse and antique dining chairs around wooden and painted tables, candles and fresh flowers, and plenty of old cricketing photos, prints and bats on the walls. The stools at the bar are well used by locals, and friendly, helpful staff serve Rebellion IPA and Vale VPA plus three guests on handpump (they hold regular beer festivals), 16 good wines by the glass, 20 malt whiskies and home-made sloe gin and blackberry vodka; big glass jars of nuts and dried fruit behind the bar, board games, TV and background music. The separate restaurant is similarly furnished and has a tiny cushioned settle, teddy bears in cricket gear, a basket of cricket bats and a chandelier over the table by the window. There's a handsome wisteria at the front and picnic-sets on a back terrace.
