Bustling town pub with a wide choice of interesting drinks, rewarding food and attractive furnishings

Set in the middle of town, this substantial place usefully opens at 10.30am when they offer teas, hot chocolate and a good selection of coffees. During service time, helpful, friendly staff serve St Austell Brunning & Price Traditional Bitter plus Mad Squirrel Hopfest, Rebellion Roasted Nuts, Redemption Big Chief, Sambrooks Powerhouse Porter and Tring Side Pocket for a Toad on handpump, 20 wines by the glass, 100 gins, 20 brandies and 50 malt whiskies. Life revolves around the bar, and this area and the interlinked dining rooms offer plenty of room for both those wanting just a drink and a chat and others after the fine range of food. There are long, wall banquettes, leather dining and wooden chairs and chesterfield sofas and armchairs on polished boards, rugs or tiles. Horse prints, pictures and photographs line bare brick or painted walls, house plants of varying size are dotted about and shelves of books abound, while open fires and woodburning stoves keep things cosy in winter; board games. A favourite spot is the conservatory towards the back with its skylight and mass of tropical plants interspersed with pretty wicker light fixtures. There are a few tables outside at the front.
