Attractive and welcoming Victorian country pub under new licensees; good interesting food from shortish regularly changing menu using local produce, three or four well kept ales and plenty of wines by the glass, friendly accommodating service, two log fires, nice country furniture on bare boards, old Goodwood racing photos (horses and cars), dining area at back; folk night first Sun of the month, classic car meeting second Weds; children and dogs (in bar) welcome, revamped downs-view garden with large part-covered terrace, four comfortable bedrooms, open all day, restaurant closed Sun evening, Mon (but some snacky food available)

Found this pub by chance (and what a find too) as we had left another pub (The Three Horseshoes at Elsted) as they were not prepared to vary their set menu and indicated a “take it or leave it” attitude; so we left it. We also left a group of friends who were still waiting for their ordered food. Malcolm & Lisa run a friendly pub that is everything you would want with a good selection of beers and wines, together with a varied menu that Lisa will discuss with you and can provide alternatives, as in our case my partner could not eat anything from the standard menu due to a medical condition. Each dish was discussed with Lisa, who then presented everything to our individual tastes. The result was absolutely marvellous. The locals were friendly and we were made most welcome. Whilst discussing menu options, we met another couple at the bar who stay there every year for the racing at Goodwood who also could not praise enough the warm hospitality bestowed upon them every year. We ended up joining them for dinner which completed an excellent evening all round. Highly recommended. We will return. Visited July 2013
