Bustling inn with character bar and airy dining room, four real ales and good wines, helpful service and seats on terrace; bedrooms

There's a gently civilised but friendly atmosphere here, with most customers aiming to enjoy the high quality food. The bar has a woodburning stove with long wooden slab tables to either side (each set with candles in brass holders and a plant) and there are wall banquettes and settles with scatter cushions, wheelback chairs, white-painted beams and stools against the counter where cheerful, attentive staff serve Banks's Amber Ale and Langham Best and Halfway to Heaven on handpump and good wines by the glass; background music. An end room is just right for a small group with a wooden settle and chunky chairs around a single table, and horse and hunting pictures. The big, airy dining room at the back has spreading country views from large picture windows, wall settles and more wheelbacks and country kitchen chairs with pretty cushions around tables of all sizes on flagstones, and a busy open kitchen. Through french windows is the terrace, largely enclosed by a marquee and with teak tables and chairs. The cottagey-style bedrooms (either in the pub or in a separate annexe and all with views) are attractive and comfortable.

What the licensee says

A 300-year-old country pub set within the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park. At The Welldiggers Arms you can savour exquisite cuisine, enjoy a drink in the traditional bar and cosy up in one of their 14 bedrooms. Watch the chefs hard at work in the open kitchen while you dine on a menu of seasonal British classics, or admire the view afforded by the large picture windows overlooking a beautiful coppice and the South Downs. With such bounteous surroundings, it's not surprising that much of the produce we use is sourced locally; from the seasonal game to the fresh vegetables and herbs. We are proud to be part of The Epicurean Collection, a group of boutique countryside inns dedicated to the finest in British food, comfort and culture -- all set in some of England's most idyllic locations.
