The good pub guide review

A bustling atmosphere and friendly service make this lovely old red-brick inn on the village green a standout success. The opened-up bar has white-painted beams, standing pillars, rugs on parquet or wide boards, an assortment of dark wooden dining chairs and tables, and armchairs beside two fireplaces; background music and board games. High chairs line the counter where cheerful, well trained staff serve St Austell Brunning & Price Traditional Bitter and guests such as Ascot Starting Gate, Park Brewery Two Storm Ruby, Reunion Minimalist and Tillingbourne Hop Troll on handpump, 20 wines by the glass, 40 gins and over 40 malt whiskies. An L-shaped dining room has a leather wall banquette and leather and brass-studded dining chairs around a mix of tables and numerous old photos and prints on exposed-brick or painted walls. There's also a comfortable dining room with similar furniture, carpeting and a big elegant metal chandelier. Outdoor seating with parasols is arranged in the little garden at the side.

The good pub guide food review

A pleasingly wide-ranging menu (special diets catered for) includes 'light bites', garlic and chilli king prawns, halloumi fries with salsa, pan-fried scallops with pea purée and shredded ham hock, crispy beef salad with cashews, grilled sea bass fillets with potato and shallot terrine, pea and mini tortellini with garden pea velouté and asparagus, pork and leek sausages with mash and buttered greens, and puddings such as summer pudding with clotted cream and triple chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce and vanilla ice-cream.
