Golden-stone former coaching inn with a good mix of customers, character bar, upstairs dining room and seats outside; comfortable bedrooms

The boutique bedrooms in this fine 18th-c place are spotlessly kept and full of character; they're across a cobbled courtyard, and do need to be booked well in advance. Throughout, the renovations have been done with extreme care so that original features blend easily with up-to-date touches. The open-plan rambling bar (there are several snug areas too) has a roaring log fire at one end, green leather padded built-in wall seats, stools and a variety of chairs around dark tables on wide floorboards, a few elbow tables here and there, and a handsome carved counter. Courteous staff serve one of the ?78s ales from Butcombe, Moor Nor'Hop, Stroud Tom Long and Wickwar Falling Star on handpump, ten wines by the glass, a farm cider, interesting spirits and a good choice of teas and coffee; the pretty piano does get used. Upstairs, a beamed and timbered dining room has dark polished furniture on more wide floorboards, creamy yellow paintwork, fresh flowers, candlelight and a fine raftered ceiling. Outside, there are seats and tables under parasols on terraces and a lawn; in summer, an Airstream trailer serves mexican street food, and boules. You can walk from the door into the woods; they're kind to dogs. Wheelchair access and disabled loos.

What the licensee says

This beautiful inn is currently closed for extensive restoration before re-opening in May 2013. The main thrust of this pub will then be a fine selection of local real ales plus a few rotating guests and a fine and unusual selection of wines and spirits with delicious locally sourced food served in the upstairs dining rooms and a fantastic garden for those long, hot, lazy summer days ( Remember them ? ). With 6 lush en-suite rooms and roaring open fires, dog and child friendly, this really will be an inn for everyone young & old alike with great music and plenty of laughter. We look forward to welcoming you and NO, we will NOT be a gastro-pub nor will we have Sky Sports, we'll be much more fun than that. Cheers all and see you next year x
