Bustling inn with beamed bar, open fires, real ales and wines by the glass and tasty food; bedrooms

The heart of this handsome 17th-c inn remains the original beamed and panelled bar with its convivial atmosphere, flagstones, attractive medley of old tables and chairs, old-fashioned window seats and a fireplace at each end ? one is huge and houses an open woodburner. An oak-floored room off here has country tables and winged high-backed settles forming a few booths; background music and board games. The restaurant has another woodburning stove. Butcombe Bitter, North Cotswold Best and St Austell Tribute on handpump and ten good wines by the glass. The attractively landscaped garden has the River Chun running through it and plenty of seats; boules. The recently refurbished bedrooms are comfortable and well appointed and the hearty breakfasts are served in the bar. Cerney House Gardens are worth a visit and there are lots of surrounding walks in lovely countryside. Do visit the lovely church opposite.

Stayed for 2 nights, made very welcome, excellent young staff, excellent food and good atmosphere in the bar

Always liked the pub and its good beer, so brought some friends to eat here. Very disappointed - the quality was good, but the portions extremely small and inadequate, especially in view of the very expensive menu. Would definitely not eat here again. Curiously, I am told that the owners also run the Storyteller restaurant in Cheltenham, for which I have only the highest praise.

We went for lunch on Monday 7 May 2012, for my father's 70th birthday. The food and setting were nice, but sadly the same cannot be said for the service. My mother asked the waitress where they got their beef from, and one of of the male staff (we think possibly the Manager) shouted out from behind the bar ' a dead cow'. No further comment or explanation was offered by either member of staff. My father then asked the waitress what size the carafes of wine were and where the wine came from, and the same male member of staff shouted over ' a bottle'. Again, no further comment or explanation was offered by either member of staff. I consider this a rude and completely unacceptable manner to speak to anyone, but in particular two pensioners and needless to say will not be crossing the threshold of this establishment again.

Went at lunchtime on way to the snowdrop event. Beer and atmosphere were fine but the freshly baked baguette was probably the worst I have ever been served. It was old, stodgy and almost inedible, whilst the filling (cheese) was tasteless and microscopic. When asked by the staff how we liked the food we told them, which evoked no response at all. I will not go back and would not recommend this pub to anyone who wants food.

Landlord owner is one of the most rudest people I have ever met. Evidence is here: http://sphotos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/1002999_10202324562214525_1958125068_n.jpg

Two of us stayed using the pub's midweek deal for room, breakfast and dinner for three nights. The pub is in a fabulous location, surrounded by glorious countryside and on the river. Our room had been recently decorated and was small but clean and pleasant. The staff were really polite and friendly. The best thing about our stay was the food and drink. There is a great selection of local ales as well as a well thought out wine list. The food was excellent, a really good choice of breakfasts including local sausages and kippers. Evening meals were tasty and varied, and the whole package was amazing value for money. We'd highly recommend the pub and are looking forward to going back.

Called it for a lunchtime snack and found atmosphere convivial, beer excellent and food good. Reccomended.
