Fine renovation of an old coaching inn with character bars and dining rooms and a thoughtful choice of good food and drink; bedrooms

From the outside, this handsome former coaching inn looks just as it has done for hundreds of years. Inside, though, all has changed. Original features blend cleverly with up-to-date touches that manage to hold on to the historic character. There are beams and timbering, bare stone walls and antique tables and dining chairs on top of rugs and wide floorboards - all mixed in with bold wallpaper, strong-coloured paintwork and bright scatter cushions. The room to the right of the entrance has vintage armchairs and a sofa in front of an open fire, and opposite are two bar rooms with chapel chairs and settles, seats in a bow window and a vast bull's head above another open fire. You'll find other rooms up small staircases and through open doorways until you reach the dining rooms - one clad with reclaimed boards lined with large skulls and seating that consists of long button-back wall banquettes and modern dining chairs. Arkells 3B, Hoperation IPA and Wiltshire Gold on handpump, several wines by the glass, a dozen gins and 13 malt whiskies; background music and board games. At the front are rustic tables and benches with more seats in a courtyard garden. Bedrooms are neat, comfortable and contemporary and breakfasts are wellregarded. Disabled access. Do visit the church which has Britain's only set of intact medieval stained-glass windows. Sister pubs are the Five Alls in Filkins and Plough at Kelmscott (Oxfordshire).
