Creeper-covered pub with a proper village bar, two dining rooms, imaginative food and a fine choice of drinks; seats in walled garden

In an attractive village-green setting, this handsome creeper-clad 17th-c pub is part of the Thyme company on the Southrop Manor Estate. There's a chatty, bustling bar with friendly locals (and maybe a dog or two), simple tables and chairs on flagstones, an open fire, stools against the counter, Hook Norton Hooky and Village Tipple (named for the pub from Sharps) on handpump, up to 15 wines by the glass from a well chosen list, and helpful staff. The two low-ceilinged dining rooms have tweed-upholstered chairs around a nice mix of tables, cushions on settles, rugs on flagstones, open fires and fresh flowers and candles. There are elegant metal chairs and tables on gravel in several sheltered walled garden areas and picnic-sets at the front; good surrounding walks.

I ate here a few months ago. The new management obviously knows all about portion control but the food is good in a fashionable, chef-led sort of way. I sensed perhaps too much emphasis on the business aspects of the operation, though the service was certainly efficient and agreeable. Current "Lucky Dip" rating seems right.

This pub should be a top tip as it promises lots and is pretty, cosy and comfy which is all great. I can't comment on the food which may be lovely, but in terms of having a couple of drinks in the evening, it isn't very friendly, the bar staff more than take their time and the pricing would be more at home in London. All in all, rather pretentious, which is a shame. Perhaps this suits their core clientele though so it doesn't worry them?
