Remarkable art nouveau décor, a fine choice of ales, friendly atmosphere and popular all-day food

This is a very special architectural gem that includes some of the best Edwardian bronze and marble art nouveau work to be found anywhere. The inner back room has big bas-relief friezes of jolly monks set into richly coloured florentine marble walls, an opulent marble-pillared inglenook fireplace, a low vaulted mosaic ceiling, gleaming mirrors, seats built into rich golden marble recesses and tongue-in-cheek verbal embellishments such as Silence is Golden and Finery is Foolish. The other large room has a fireplace and plenty of seats and tables. Staff are helpful, efficient and friendly (despite the crowds) and serve a fantastic range of around ten real ales including their core three - Fullers London Pride, Nicholsons Pale Ale (named for the pub from St Austell) and Sharps Doom Bar - on handpump with seven guests from breweries such as Purity, Roosters, Sambrooks, Thornbridge, Titanic and so forth, and several wines by the glass. Background music. In warmer weather, people spill out on to the wide forecourt, near the approach to Blackfriars Bridge.
